
It is the ninth most populated municipality in the department of Boyacá and one of the ten highest in the country because it is located over 3,030 meters above sea level, it is also known for being the main producer of onion in the country. It is well known for its proximity to Lake Tota for being one of the 3 municipalities that surround it. The most outstanding island territories of Aquitania are the island of San Pedro and the tourist viewpoint of Peña de la Virgen, the peninsula of Potrero and the sanctuary of the Lord of Miracles whose festivities are held in mid-January. In this municipality there is also a space for ecotourism in the Páramo de los Curies.
